As long as the cat litter is made from natural sources it is good to compost and can go in a Bokashi One Bucket or an EnsoPet. We recommend keeping compost with pet waste a metre away from where food is grown. It does not make any difference as to if the cat is an outside or inside cat.

Hi Alison, Thanks for your comment, good to hear from you. With the lid on there would not be any smell coming from a Bokashi One Bucket. When the bucket is open, the waste inside the bucket will smell, however it would not be a putrid or rotten smell. The smell inside the bucket, is a fermenting smell, mixed with the smell of the food waste. The Bokashi One Mix ensures the prawns shells will not putrefy, but as they have a particularly strong smell it is normal the bokashi waste would smell stronger. Adding more Bokashi One Mix is necessary for any high protein or strong-smelling foods, so it is great you added more. Some people choose not to compost certain waste due to smell, not me, I always compost prawn shells, but I take a note and make sure I empty the bucket within a month, so the fishy smell does not permeate the bucket.

It would be ok to add the substrate back to the garden or to your bokashi bucket, I would add it to the garden so save more room in your bucket for food waste.
