What Can Be Composted Poster

What can I compost in my Bokashi One Bucket?

Just about all kitchen waste can be added to your Bokashi One Bucket!

Essentially anything that was ever alive can be composted. The Bokashi One Bucket and microbe mix simplify and accelerate the composting process.
What can I compost? What shouldn't I compost?
  • Dairy
  • Citrus
  • Fish
  • Bread, rice, pasta and cereals
  • Eggs and egg shells
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Coffee grinds
  • Tea bags
  • Wilted flowers
  • Tissues, paper towels, brown bags and serviettes
  • Raw and processed foods
  • Cooked and uncooked meat
  • Large bones
  • Excessive amounts of liquid

Hi there,

I have a question. Is it possible to put cat litter from the cat toilet in my Bokashi bin and use it, when well fermented, in the vegetable garden?
The cat doesn't come outside, of that makes a difference.

Thanx a lot!

Hi Jaz
As long as the cat litter is made from natural sources it is good to compost and can go in a Bokashi One Bucket or an EnsoPet. We recommend keeping compost with pet waste a metre away from where food is grown. It does not make any difference as to if the cat is an outside or inside cat.
Here is a link to more information on composting kitty litter.

Compost in my bin grows a white type of mould, should this happen?

Hi June,

Thanks for your questions, yes this absolutely should be happening. This is a fungi and an indication that your waste is fermenting.

Hi June, just wondering if prawn shells are okay? We added some over the weekend and it does smell a bit more than normal. I added an extra layer of bokashi and hope it settles down a bit. Other than the prawn scraps it all seems to be working well, my plants are loving the liquid. We also buried our first load a couple of weeks ago. We do love in Far North Queensland were the weather is particularly humid, so it will be interesting to see or rather smell what the compost will smell like when summer comes.
I look forward to your reply.
Kind regards
Alison

Hi Alison, Thanks for your comment, good to hear from you. With the lid on there would not be any smell coming from a Bokashi One Bucket. When the bucket is open, the waste inside the bucket will smell, however it would not be a putrid or rotten smell. The smell inside the bucket, is a fermenting smell, mixed with the smell of the food waste. The Bokashi One Mix ensures the prawns shells will not putrefy, but as they have a particularly strong smell it is normal the bokashi waste would smell stronger. Adding more Bokashi One Mix is necessary for any high protein or strong-smelling foods, so it is great you added more. Some people choose not to compost certain waste due to smell, not me, I always compost prawn shells, but I take a note and make sure I empty the bucket within a month, so the fishy smell does not permeate the bucket.

Hi,
I have two potted citronella plants that died while I was away, can I put all of it in my bokashi bin? Or just the shriveled/very dead citronella and put the substrate back in my garden?
Thanks

It would be ok to add the substrate back to the garden or to your bokashi bucket, I would add it to the garden so save more room in your bucket for food waste.
